Syria: Death toll rises in governorate of Sweida

Damascus, Aug 17 (Prensa Latina) The death toll from the recent violence in the southern Syrian governorate of Sweida has reached 1,677, according to human rights organizations cited by several media outlets.

The above figure includes both civilian and military deaths from the beginning of the bloody events on July 13 until the announcement of the ceasefire on July 20, according to an updated report by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

According to the organization, the victims include 452 people executed on the ground, including children, women, and medical personnel, reflecting the magnitude of the violations committed in just one week of escalation. In its breakdown, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights pointed out that the dead included 725 residents of Sweida, the majority of whom were citizens of the Druze community, of whom 167 were civilians, including 21 minors and 57 women.

It also documented the deaths of 477 members of the Ministry of Defense and Public Security. In addition, 15 personnel were killed as a result of Israeli bombing, as well as three people—including a woman—killed in an airstrike against Ministry of Defense facilities.

The death toll also includes two media professionals and 20 healthcare workers at the Sweida National Hospital, executed by military and security forces.

The Observatory emphasized that the majority of the executions were against Druze citizens, including 43 women, 14 children, and one elderly person, but also three members of the Bedouin tribe, including a woman and a child, were killed in similar circumstances by Druze militants.

The London-based organization warned that the death toll could rise due to the severity of the injuries suffered by dozens of people, and reiterated its call for the international community to act against the increasing violations against the civilian population in southern Syria.
