According to its latest report entitled “The Painful Balance”, the entity gives a detailed analysis of the humanitarian catastrophe hitting the Palestinian refugee community in Syria, whose camps were turned into scenes of bombings, fighting and forced disappearances.
According to the report, the number of missing Palestinians amounted to 5,370, with no information on their whereabouts to date.
The Yarmuk camp, in Damascus, concentrates the highest number of victims, with 1,596 Palestinians killed, including 194 women.
The text warns that the figures do not reflect the full magnitude of the tragedy, due to the difficulties in documenting the cases and the families’ fear of disclosing information.
In concluding, the Task Force called for the establishment of an independent international mechanism to investigate the whereabouts of the missing and to demand accountability for human rights violations.
It also called on UNRWA to expand its psychological and legal assistance programs for the families of victims.
