This decision, which will be made in the days leading up to the next annual Assembly of the highest international body, “is unusual and breaks with a long-standing tradition in which Argentina has had a prominent presence and participation, being a recognized actor in the defense of human rights at the global level,” the group emphasizes.
Mundo Sur, which brings together prestigious figures from Argentina’s political and intellectual spheres, regrets President Javier Milei’s decision, which aims “to perpetuate a foreign policy of subservience and submission to the decisions promoted by President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.”
In a statement, the group emphasizes that these are “the only countries that also reject their participation in this body, the most important for the protection of human rights. In this way, Milei shows that his intention is far from advocating for an end to the wars and genocide being perpetrated in Gaza.”
Regarding Milei, it states that he is a president who, “once again, shames us by adopting, in the name of Argentina, positions that are clearly defined in our National Constitution and in the laws that govern our democratic system.”
“From Mundo Sur, we demand the modification of this unconsulted and almost secret measure, since there is no official information on the matter. We also demand that our country restore its representation on the Human Rights Council, as it has done on no fewer than five occasions since its creation.”
This group is a diverse collective, made up of men and women from multiple currents of the national and popular movement.
