Guatemala’s President reaffirms historic struggle of indigenous women

Guatemala City, Sep 5 (Prensa Latina) Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo reaffirmed the historic struggle of indigenous women in defense of their rights and traditions, on the occasion of the International Day dedicated to this sector.

In a ceremony held in Patio de la Paz of the National Palace of Culture, the seat of government, the president reaffirmed his commitment to the individual and collective rights of each and every Mayan, Garifuna, and Xinca women.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to the Ladina (non-indigenous) women, “because only in defending, protecting, and promoting the well-being of women is there a path to a more just and equitable country,” the head of state emphasized.

Before representatives of the Office of the Ombudsman for Indigenous Women, cooperation agencies, leaders, officials from various ministries, and invited guests, Arevalo recognized the ancestral strength that has allowed these women to remain alive, vibrant, and flourishing.

He considered that Indigenous women have been fundamental in the resistance, preservation, and defense of the territory, often invisible, but always present, steadfast, and determined to carry forward this effort and struggle.

He reflected that social and gender justice finds its clearest expression when it becomes a tool that effectively listens to and protects Indigenous women, the most marginalized and discriminated against in national development.

The 66-year-old politician affirmed that to contribute to the dignity of Indigenous women, it is important not only to hold an event like this with its symbolic dimension but, above all, to act to strengthen the institutional framework.
