Upon opening the meeting, Ethiopian Planning and Development Minister Fitsum Assefa remembered that Africa contributes the least to global emissions but suffers the most severe impacts.
Assefa stated that in many communities, women and girls spend many hours walking to fetch water when rivers dry up, losing valuable time from school and work.
She underscored that Africa should not be portrayed only as a victim; our continent is also a provider of climate solutions, often ignored and under-recognized.
This group, currently chaired by Sudan, is composed of climate change negotiators from each African country. One state is selected to chair the meeting for a two-year term.
In addition to this conclave, the African Youth Climate Assembly (AYCA), the Non-State Actors Forum (NSF), and the 13th Conference on Climate Change and Development in Africa (ClimDev-Africa) held sessions that will enrich the discussions at ACS2, scheduled for September 8-10 in this capital.
