The date, which commemorates the 1822 proclamation, will be marked by simultaneous demonstrations from the right and left, amid a scenario of political and diplomatic tension.
The immediate background is the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro, accused of an alleged coup attempt following the 2022 general elections.
Added to this are the recent sanctions imposed by US President Donald Trump against Brazilian authorities, including Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Federal Court (STF).
In Belo Horizonte, capital of the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, Liberty Square will be the scene of one of the main Bolsonarista rallies (supporters of Bolsonaro).
The left will also take to the streets, with rallies in several cities under the slogan “Sovereign Brazil,” the same slogan chosen by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s government for the official parade in the capital.
In Belo Horizonte, the progressive rally will join the Cry of the Excluded, which for three decades has denounced social inequalities and exclusionary policies.
