Defenses request unify crimes for those accused of coup in Brazil

Brasilia, Sep 8 (Prensa Latina) The defendants' lawyers in the main trial for the attempted coup in Brazil asked the Supreme Court to include the crime of coup under the abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law.

Such a proposal seeks to ensure that, in case of a conviction, the defendants do not face cumulative sentences for two different kinds of crimes.

However, the Attorney General’s Office insists that the offenses should be considered separately.

The legal discussion will be assessed by the First Court of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) this week.

Five judges will decide whether to convict or acquit the group one’s eight defendants, including former President Jair Bolsonaro and General Walter Braga Netto.

Sessions will run from Tuesday to Friday, given the expectation of long and complex votes.

Depending on the ruling, expected on September 12, Bolsonaro could face criminal penalties of up to 43 years in prison and be ineligible politically, aggravating his already delicate legal situation.
