According to the legal staff of the former representative, “the sentences imposed are absurdly excessive and disproportionate and, after analyzing the terms of the judgment, he will present the relevant appeals, even at an international level”.

The team admitted that it respected the ruling, but expressed “deep disagreement and outrage at the terms”.

He claims that the former ruler did not attack the Democratic State, never participated in any plan, much less in the anti-democratic acts that occurred on January 8, 2023.

Bolsonaro was found guilty of armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the rule of law, attempted coup d’état, damage qualified by violence and serious threat and deterioration of historical heritage.

The sum of these convictions translates into an unprecedented sentence against a former Brazilian president.

Of the 27 years and three months imposed, 24 years and nine months correspond to imprisonment in closed regime, while the remaining two years and nine months will be served in open or semi-open regime.

The sentence constitutes a historic blow against Bolsonaro and his environment, but the practical effects will not be immediate.

His defense may file appeals that will have to be reviewed by the Supreme Court itself before the conviction becomes final and the prison is executed.
