The decision to apoint the former Supreme Court chief justice responds to a key demand of representatives of the movement that the Western press called Generation Z, which pushed for the dissolution of Parliament and a non-partisan government, according to presidential press adviser Kiran Pokhrel.
Karki was the first female chief justice of Nepal’s Supreme Court and served from July 2016 to June 2017.
In 2017, she faced an impeachment motion brought by lawmakers from the then-ruling Nepali Congress and CPN (Maoist Center).
She now leads a government tasked with holding new parliamentary elections within six months and transferring power, according to the Nepali press.
