In an official statement, African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf remembered the normative frameworks adopted by the continental organization, particularly the African Charter on Democracy, Elections, and Governance.
The latter, he specified, remains the reference instrument that guides member states in their efforts to consolidate democratic institutions and promote citizen participation.
On this symbolic day, Youssouf encouraged countries to redouble efforts to move forward and consolidate democracy, transparency, and good governance, considered essential conditions for peace, inclusive development, prosperity, and integration in Africa.
Finally, he reiterated the AU’s unwavering commitment to supporting its member states and the peoples of Africa in achieving their democratic aspirations.
The International Day of Democracy was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on November 8, 2007, an initiative that seeks to promote governance as a set of fundamental values and principles to ensure equality, security, and development for all human beings.
