PhD Nelson Espinosa, director of the Ozone Technical Unit (OTOZ), a Cuban entity that is celebrating 30 years of implementing national plans for the progressive elimination of substances that deplete this protective layer against the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays, made this remark to reporters.
Espinosa praised that the educational, scientific, and recreational actions are being promoted in all provinces to mark the anniversary, in a context that also commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Vienna Convention, to which Cuba is a signatory.
The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete and Harm the Ozone Layer was signed in 1987.
The Kigali Amendment (Rwanda) to the Montreal Protocol entered into force in 2019. It aims to reduce gradually the production and consumption of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), powerful gases that contribute to global warming.
Espinosa informed that to date, more than 100 of these kinds of substances have been eliminated in the country, in phases that have been definitively completed in favor of the environment and the conservation of the planet.
