In an interview published on the organization’s official website, Guterres warned about the deep geopolitical divide and the sense of impunity that hinder the solution to global problems.
Every country believes it can do whatever it wants. There is a vicious cycle where nations look to the great powers and then feel entitled to resolve their ambitions through war, he noted.
Given this scenario, he urged world leaders to change this situation and understand that international cooperation is vital at a time like this.
The crisis is multifaceted. On the one hand, developing countries face enormous difficulties, many of them drowning in debt.
On the other hand, climate change is still not under control, and there is a risk of not being able to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees. Added to this is unregulated technological advancement, which amplifies hate speech and polarizes societies, he noted.
Guterres reiterated that concerted action through the UN is essential in every crisis and advocated for negotiations and mediation to at least create hope for peace.
