The African continental organization stated that the talk held at UN headquarters in New York, covered a wide range of shared priorities, including reform of the Security Council and international financial institutions, preventive diplomacy, and financing of peace operations.
Mediation efforts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Sudan, debt relief, climate finance, food security, and the global trading system were also discussed.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to working together to move forward these priorities, in addition to recognizing Africa’s potential to promote its growth.
They underscored the unsustainable nature of Africa’s debt burden and agreed on the urgency of a fair financial architecture, fairer credit ratings, and climate finance.
Youssouf reiterated that Africa, while contributing the least emissions, suffers the most from climate impacts. In this regard, he called for increased financing for adaptation, loss, and damage, and a fairer trade order.
The bilateral commitment preceded the sixth African Union (AU), the European Union (EU), and the United Nations (UN) trilateral meeting held on Sunday, on the sidelines of the high-level week of the General Assembly.
