French farmers protest against EU-MERCOSUR deal

Paris, Sep 26 (Prensa Latina) French farmers are protesting on Friday against the Free Trade Agreement between the European Union (EU) and MERCOSUR, in a day in which tractor demonstrations are expected.

The call to take to the streets was issued several days ago by the National Federation of French Farmers’ Unions (FNSEA), the largest union organization, and the Young Farmers.

In addition to denouncing the EU-MERCOSUR deal, which they consider a promoter of unfair competition, the protesters reject the tariff crusade unleashed by US President Donald Trump.

In early September, the EU launched the ratification process for its Free Trade Agreement with MERCOSUR, an economic bloc founded in 1991 and currently comprising Argentina, Bolivia (a new member state), Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Venezuela (with all rights suspended).

Under pressure from farmers and political parties, the French government rejected the agreement and is trying to extend its concerns to other European countries.

According to reports, about 20 tractors were placed outside the Palace of Versailles, one of France’s leading tourist attractions, early Friday as part of a union mobilization.
