Ecuador continues protests on fifth day of national strike

Quito, Sept 26 (Prensa Latina) Protests continue in Ecuador on the fifth day of the national strike called by the indigenous movement against Daniel Noboa government's measure to end diesel subsidy and other decisions of his administration.

This Friday, the Integrated Security Service ECU 911 reported road closures due to demonstrations in the provinces of Imbabura, Pichincha, and Zamora Chinchipe.

In addition, the National Union of Educators (UNE) and the National Federation of Affiliates, Retirees, and Artisanal Fishermen of the Farmer Social Security (FEUNASSC) closed the Jipijapa-Guayaquil highway in the coastal province of Manabi.

At that point, the protesters spoke out against what they consider “Noboa’s package,” burned tires, and expressed their support for the indefinite national strike.

On the other hand, Petroecuador Workers’ Company Committee reported that their union supports the strike for “the legitimate demands for social justice, decent work, and respect for the country’s resources,” according to a statement released on social media.

The day before, in the city of Cuenca, province of Azuay, police fiercely attacked a group of students protesting against the government.

The violence is not being carried out by the people in resistance, but by Daniel Noboa government, which orders the repression of those who speak out against its policies of misery, denounced the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE), the entity that called the strike.

This organization stated that there are reports and evidence documenting brutal repression in multiple parts of the country, such as in Huaycopungo, Otavalo (Imbabura), where security forces entered, indiscriminately launched tear gas, beat protesters, and carried out arbitrary arrests.
