Uruguay’s PIT-CNT decides to convene a work stoppage

Montevideo, Sep 26 (Prensa Latina) Uruguay's PIT-CNT trade union decided to convene a partial national work stoppage with a mobilization for labor rights and demanding changes to the five-year budget proposed on Friday by the government.

The Representative Council of the National Trade Union Center stated that the Executive Secretariat decided that it will determine the date of the protest between October 20 and 30.

Enrique Mendez, PIT-CNT Secretary of Organization and Secretary General of the Federation of Dairy Industry Workers (FTIL), explained that the mobilization will be held in Montevideo and its metropolitan area.

Mendez said the decision responds to a scenario “marked by conflicts, union repression, plant closures, restructuring, and cuts,” in addition to influencing the budget debate and demanding a development path that prioritizes social needs.

He stated, “We want a budget that looks toward a national development strategy, that taxes big business and includes concrete proposals, such as prioritizing education, housing, the University of the Republic, and industrial development within the country, that we have already presented in Parliament.”

The Industrial Unions’ Confederation (CSI) convened a partial national work stoppage for September 30, in response to what it described as a wave of layoffs in the sector.
