In a statement, the union noted that dozens more were injured, detained, or missing, and warned that these actions represent “one of the most severe waves of repression and organized attacks in the modern era” and asserted that journalists have become the first line of defense for the truth in the coastal enclave.
The note points out that the Israeli offensive destroyed the homes of 670 media members.
In 2024, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization awarded the Guillermo Cano Prize to Palestinian journalists covering the conflict in recognition of their work.
Recently, Palestinian Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh called on the international community to take urgent measures to hold Israeli authorities accountable for the systematic killings and attacks against journalists.
Palestinian National Council President Rawhi Fattouh made a similar statement, accusing the neighboring country of trying to silence the truth.
Israel’s objective with the murders of journalists in Gaza is to prevent its crimes from being exposed to the world, he emphasized.
