Colombia committed to sustainable tourism

Buenos Aires, Sept 29 (Prensa Latina) Colombia is committed to promoting sustainable tourism to take advantage of its natural resources and attractive destinations, benefiting communities by involving them in the work and serving visitors, said Luis Fernando Fuentes, director of ProColombia in Argentina.

The executive, that is leading Colombia’s colorful stand at the 29th edition of the Buenos Aires International Tourism Fair, FIT 2025, told Prensa Latina: “Last year, seven million non-resident travelers visited us, which represented a 9 percent increase compared to 2023.

This year, we’re also making significant progress thanks to the number of foreign visitors from January to July, which represents a 6 percent increase,” he said.

“We hope the flow of tourists continues to grow, and this Fair gives us the opportunity to show Argentines why Colombia is a great destination—an innovative, competitive destination, especially one with the virtue of working with a national government policy promoting sustainable tourism,” he noted.

Colombia received approximately 101,000 tourists from Argentina in 2023, a figure that rose to 110,000 in 2024, representing a 9 percent increase. “This year, from January to July, we recorded visits from 82,000 Argentines, and this represents a 25 percent increase compared to the same period last year,” Fuentes explained.

“That’s why we believe they’re listening, learning, and exploring more tourist destinations in Colombia every day. Their favorites are the cities of Bogota, Cartagena, Medellin, and Santa Marta and San Andres Island, while the number of visitors to Cali has been growing. This leads us to believe we must continue consolidating the destination with key elements, especially sustainable tourism,” said the director of ProColombia.

One of the priorities Colombian tourism is working on is to better connect communities with all this business activity that not only brings them economic income but also allows them to somehow preserve the tangible and intangible heritage they possess from their ancestors, Fuentes added.
