In a message disseminated through social media, the head of government called on the population to stay informed through official channels and to join the recovery efforts as soon as conditions allow.
Authorities in Guantanamo and Santiago de Cuba continue to assess the damage and coordinate actions to assist communities affected by the heavy rainfall that has been occurring since Friday in the eastern part of the country.
In Santiago de Cuba, the rains caused flooding in various areas of the city, damaging homes and other infrastructure.
According to local media, the most vulnerable areas—especially those located near hillsides and retaining walls—have suffered landslides and mudslides due to the weight of the accumulated water.
Civil Defense authorities, the Fire Department, and the Red Cross are working intensively on rescue and evacuation efforts in the most affected areas.
In Guantanamo, the greatest damage is found in the municipality of Caimanera, particularly in the towns of Hatibonico and Cayamo, where landslides, home collapses, damage to power lines, flooded rivers, and fallen trees have been reported.
These damages continue to be monitored due to the constant rainfall, which is expected to persist as long as Tropical Storm Imelda remains in the country.
