Petro stated that Colombia belongs to the South Atlantic and the Caribbean Sea, and therefore has no place in the organization with which it has been a global partner for eight years.
“If a North Atlantic government decides to be an ally of crimes against humanity, what do we do there? These are drastic measures, but I think they must be taken now,” the president stated during a Council of Ministers meeting at the Casa de Nariño (Presidential Palace).
The head of State also ruled out that this position entails rapprochement with the BRICS bloc because, he stated, it is made up of oil-producing nations.
He assured in his speech that there will be a process of purging the diplomatic corps and Intelligence officials who were dedicated to boycotting his foreign policy, especially regarding ties with China.
He then announced the replacement of “the embassy staff in China, who sabotage relations, change my agendas, cancel appointments, without our knowledge.”
Petro mentioned that Colombia will seek a non-aligned policy, critical of hegemonic power and focused on Latin American interests.
