In a statement, the institution, located in the state of Sao Paulo, stressed that the situation has deteriorated to such an extent that violations of the human rights and dignity of the Palestinian population have become a permanent and unacceptable constant, which has led to a reconsideration of the continued collaboration.
According to Unicamp Rector Paulo Cesar Montagner, the university has previously spoken out on the conflict in Gaza and that the decision represents a reaffirmation of its “position against the genocide of the Palestinian population.”
For Montagner, the decision represents an institutional stance against genocide and is in line with the Brazilian government’s criticism of Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
The measure represents the unilateral termination of a pact signed in 2023 that included joint research projects and student exchange programs.
This initiative did not come solely from the university leadership; for weeks, student groups and organizations in solidarity with the Palestinian cause held demonstrations in front of the rector’s office, demanding the suspension of the academic alliance.
After the resolution was announced, the student union described the measure as a “historic achievement” and urged Brazil to move toward greater diplomatic distancing from Israel.
