The UN Security Council adopted a resolution authorizing the deployment of 5,500 troops to Haiti to replace the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMAS).
This document was approved by 12 countries, with three nations abstaining, according to the newspaper Le Facteur Haiti.
The Gang Suppression Force’s missions will include carrying out, independently or in cooperation with the Haitian National Police (HNP) and the Haitian Armed Forces, anti-gang operations to neutralize, isolate, and deter bandits.
Ensure the security of key infrastructure and transit points, such as the airport, ports, schools, orphanages, hospitals, detention centers, and major intersections.
Support the HNP, the Haitian Armed Forces, and national institutions to achieve a peace that allows for elections.
The Gang Suppression Force will facilitate humanitarian assistance and the safe departure of people wishing to leave gangs, including children, and will support the fight against illicit trafficking and arms diversion.
