India pays tribute to Gandhi, inspirer for Day of Non-Violence

New Delhi, Oct 2 (Prensa Latina) Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a heartfelt tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on the 156th birthday of the Father of the Nation, and inspirer for the International Day of Non-Violence, which is marked on Thursday.

The head of Government highlighted Gandhi’s enduring legacy of truth, non-violence, and moral courage, which is followed by generations around the world.

He reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to Gandhi’s ideals as guiding principles on the collective journey toward a developed and inclusive India.

October 2 marks Gandhi Jayanti in India to commemorate this universal figure’s birthday, and globally, the International Day of Non-Violence, declared by the United Nations in June 2007, to promote a global culture of peace and tolerance.

The date is commemorated at the United Nations with statements by the secretary-general and events that connect Gandhi’s philosophy with current reality.

Messages have denounced in the last few years global conflicts and recalled Gandhi’s belief in truth and non-violence as weapons more powerful than any other.

The International Day of Non-Violence, therefore, stands as a national tribute and a global call to action.
