At 9:00 a.m. local time, the polling stations opened for the more than six thousand members of the electoral body to begin voting for the new members of parliament, whose composition reflects a key institutional reconfiguration in the process of rebuilding the Syrian state.
According to Nawar Najma, spokesperson for the Supreme Committee for Elections to the People’s Assembly, the voting process will initially conclude at 12:00 p.m., with the possibility of extending until 4:00 p.m. if not all members cast their votes.
The last Syrian legislative elections were held in July 2024, when Bashar al-Assad was still president.
However, in January this year, the new political leadership dissolved the Assembly as part of the institutional transition process.
The elections, originally scheduled for September, were postponed due to the instability in the northeast of the country, controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and in the southern province of Sweida.
