Syria begins vote count in parliamentary elections

Damascus, Oct 5 (Prensa Latina) Vote counting began in several Syrian polling stations, while voting hours were extended in other constituencies, in the first parliamentary elections since the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad at the end of 2024.

The official SANA news agency reported statements by President Ahmad Al-Shara, who inspected the progress of the electoral process at the National Library in Damascus.

During his visit, the president emphasized that “in just a few months, Syria has managed to initiate an electoral process adapted to the circumstances it is facing.”

Al-Shara emphasized that “there are many laws that must be passed to advance the construction process,” while stressing the collective nature of national reconstruction. “Building Syria is a collective task, and all Syrians must contribute to it,” he declared.

According to Mohammad Al-Ahmad, chairman of the Supreme Committee for the Elections to the People’s Assembly, voting has spread to Damascus and other major cities, while it has already concluded in rural areas of the capital and several provincial centers.

Al-Ahmad confirmed that the process is proceeding without incident and highlighted the civic enthusiasm of the Syrian people at “the first real experience of electing their representatives to the Assembly.”
