President Jose Raul Mulino signed on Monday the decree on the country’s entry into the bloc, including Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, a decision previously approved unanimously by the plenary session of the National Assembly (Parliament).
Mulino thanked, at a press briefing on Thursday, the representatives for their support in approving this document, due to the importance of elevating the country to this trade and economic bloc.
In addition to making Panama the gateway for MERCOSUR to Central America, it is also an opportunity for a broad and attractive market for Panamanian producers.
Commerce and Industry Minister Julio Molto described the approval of this law as unprecedented work between the Executive and the Legislative.
He emphasized that it now opens up investment opportunities and allows member countries to take advantage of Panama’s logistics capacity, multinational corporation regimes, and multimodal platform.
Agricultural Development Minister Roberto Linares said this agreement now makes it possible to protect the sector with sensitive products, where nations such as Brazil and Argentina, with more advanced agricultural technology, have made themselves available to support.
President Molino signed the complementary agreements to the process, in the framework of the 65th Summit of Heads of State of MERCOSUR held in Uruguay in December 2024.
