A report published on the website of the daily newspaper Il Faro di Roma expressed that the meeting confirmed the rapport forged between the two states during the pontificate of Pope Francis, particularly on the issues of peace and the ceasefire in Ukraine.
The Holy See and Hungary “share the urgency of ending the spiral of violence that is bloodying the European continent and of promoting concrete negotiations for a diplomatic solution,” the statement indicates.
The analysis highlights that Orban, who favors a cautious strategy regarding arms shipments and maintaining channels of dialogue with Moscow, “found in Leo XIV a partner attentive to the need to protect civilian lives and build bridges, not walls, between nations in conflict.”
“Peace, once again, seemed to be a meeting point between the Pope and the Hungarian Prime Minister, united in the conviction that war can never be a solution,” the text adds.
After his audience with the Bishop of Rome, Orban met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, and Monsignor Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States, with whom he discussed, among other topics, the conflict in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East.
During the cordial meeting at the Secretariat of State, the strong bilateral relations were highlighted, and the Catholic Church’s commitment to promoting social development and the well-being of the Hungarian community was appreciated, according to a statement from the Vatican press office.
