This Tuesday, the debate on Washington’s economic, commercial, and financial blockade against the island begins at the United Nations General Assembly, and the diplomat urged the international community to once again support the Caribbean nation.
During a live broadcast on the Embassy’s official Facebook page, Gutierrez described the set of coercive measures as “an unjust policy that violates international law,” which for more than six decades has seriously affected the island’s economic and social development.
“The Cuban people have been victims of this inhumane policy for more than 60 years. The objective of the blockade has not changed: to damage the population’s standard of living and provoke a social uprising that will lead to a change in the constitutional order, freely elected by our people,” he asserted.
The ambassador specified that between March 2024 and February 2025, the material damages caused by the blockade amounted to $7.5 billion.
“The United States government is trying to cut off all possible sources of external income for Cuba, harm tourism, sabotage international medical collaboration, and impede family remittances and investments,” he stated.
He also denounced that Cuba’s inclusion on the unilateral list of countries allegedly sponsoring terrorism “impedes its access to the international banking and financial system” and exacerbates the Caribbean nation’s economic difficulties.
“Without the blockade, our material needs would be resolved more quickly,” Gutierrez commented, adding that this policy represents a massive violation of the Cuban people’s human rights.
