“It is truly a privilege for me to be at this celebration,” emphasized the head of this branch of the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance, speaking to Cuban doctors coordinating in different departments.
She recounted that she was 27 years old, a recent graduate, when she was working in Quiché and Hurricane Mitch struck the region.
She asked them about the support needed and the possibility of the Cuban brigade being in the country, to which they replied: “We need you.”
“Now it is my turn to participate from this position and offer a few simple words, but full of gratitude, because many of you risked and even gave your lives” in the context of healthcare,” the doctor explained.
This stage sounds easy, but being away from home is filled with mixed emotions, he reflected, while sending a fraternal greeting and embrace to the families of the Cuban healthcare professionals.
He recalled the work carried out by Cuban doctors amidst the tragedy of the 2018 eruption of the Fuego volcano.
Other events struck this Central American territory, but we also rose up and we healthcare workers continue to be part of this story, to which the efforts of Cuban collaboration are added, Sam expressed.
The devastating passage of Hurricane Mitch through Central America on November 5th brought the forerunners of this altruistic and humanitarian cooperation between two sister nations.
