Costa Rica’s students suffer violence, bullying, and mistreatment

San Jose, Nov 7 (Prensa Latina) – The student sector in Costa Rica is currently facing a problem of violence and bullying among students in their schools, and from adults against them, totaling some 4,300 cases since 2023, according to an official institution.

Approximately 1,100 of these aggressive incidents within the school environment occurred in the country’s educational centers so far in 2025 alone, added the Office of the Comptroller for Student Rights of the Ministry of Public Education (MEP), as reported by Diario Extra.

The College of Psychology Professionals of the Central American nation urged authorities to incorporate a greater number of professionals in this field into educational centers, where the current ratio is only one psychologist for every 1,000 students.

According to this institution, the work of these professionals is essential “to guarantee the emotional well-being of children and adolescents and to address problems such as bullying, anxiety, and depression in the student population in general.”

Experts from the College of Professional Psychologists warned that the Ministry of Public Education (MEP) lacks the necessary number of psychologists to address current demands in a comprehensive and timely manner.
