Congo President in Angola to attend Independence Day celebrations

Luanda, Nov 10 (Prensa Latina) The President of the Republic of Congo, Denis Sassou-N’Guesso, arrived in Luanda to participate in the main event commemorating the 50th anniversary of Angola's independence.

The leader of the neighboring country is one of 40 individuals whom the Angolan government has chosen to recognize with the commemorative medal for the 50th anniversary of liberation from colonialism, in the Class of Honor, acknowledging the role of the former Congo-Brazzaville in the struggle against the Portuguese metropolis.

The neighboring nation served as a rallying point and training ground for the guerrillas who, after February 4, 1961, confronted the colonialists, and played a fundamental role until the proclamation of independence on November 11, 1975.

Sassou-N’Guesso did not receive the award on November 6 because he was in Brazil for the 30th Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP30), so it is expected that he will receive the honor during his stay in Angola.

Angolan President João Lourenço commented during the medal ceremony that the Class of Honor was awarded to heads of State and former heads of State and government of countries whose role and contributions were decisive for the success of the national liberation struggle.
