Ecuadorian organization denounces effects of US blockade on Cuba

Quito, Nov 21 (Prensa Latina) The Segundo Montes Mozo SJ Human Rights Documentation Center (CSMM) in Ecuador communicated to the United Nations its observations on how the United States blockade is currently affecting the well-being and human rights of Cubans.

In a document sent to UN Special Rapporteur Alena Douhan as a contribution to her visit to the island, the CSMM warned that “there is not a single sector of Cuban social and economic life that escapes the effects of the blockade,” which has been in place since 1962.

In the report, which Prensa Latina obtained, the organization argued that this policy has intensified with the Helms-Burton Act, as well as with the 243 measures imposed by the Donald Trump administration and subsequently maintained by the Joe Biden administration.

The Ecuadorian organization also noted that Cuba’s inclusion on the US list of state sponsors of terrorism “lacks legal grounds and evidence” and has “serious repercussions” for human rights.

It further cited that five UN experts had already warned in 2024 that this designation “negatively impacts the rights to health, education, food, and development.”

The report sent to Douhan also describes the impacts on sectors such as health, education, and food as a consequence of economic and trade restrictions.

The CSMM text emphasized that the sanctions “increase food prices and hinder domestic production,” particularly affecting children and vulnerable groups.
