Chilean presidential candidates prepare for first face-to-face debate

Santiago, Chile, Nov 25 (Prensa Latina) The two candidates for the Chilean presidency, Jeannette Jara and Jose Antonio Kast, are gettin teady for a debate this week, when they will participate in a social forum organized by Hogar de Cristo Foundation.

This will be the first face-to-face meeting between Jara, the candidate of left-wing, social democratic, and progressive parties plus the Christian Democrats, and Kast, the candidate of the far-right Republican Party, supported by the National Libertarian Party and the traditional right.

The meeting, scheduled for Thursday, is also sponsored by Radio Cooperativa and aims to explore their proposals for addressing poverty and vulnerability.

Both candidates, who will face each other in the runoff election on December 14, have two different visions for the country.

“Our candidate is recognized not only for her career, for having served as undersecretary and minister, but also for having made progress on the 40-hour workweek, pension reform, and for forming the largest coalition in the country’s history since the return to democracy.”

This was declared by Constanza Martinez, the leading representative of the Broad Front.

Meanwhile, the Republican Party candidate stated that his government program has three main pillars and 33 measures, the principal one being to restore security to Chile, for which he proposes a hardline approach against crime and immigration.

Kast, who advocates for building mega-prisons like those in El Salvador, met with that country’s Minister of Security, Gustavo Villatoro.
