Until November 29, nearly a thousand participants, including bar association presidents, lawyers, legislators from the region, and international partners, are attending the event, which is being convened by the African nation for the first time.
The president of the Ethiopian Federal Bar Association, Tewodros Getachew, explained that the conference will serve as a platform to chart the next chapter for the legal profession in the region.
Tewodros specified that the thematic areas of discussion include forums for Leading Law Firms, Women Lawyers, Young Lawyers, and the Rule of Law.
These will feature prominent international panelists in their respective fields, he added.
“We expect Ethiopian lawyers to benefit greatly from this, whether by participating directly in training panels, developing skills, networking, expanding their professional practice, and influencing the region,” he noted.
For his part, EALS Executive Director David Sigano stated that this landmark event includes essential spaces and is part of the trend toward creating an African lawyer capable of operating without fear or border limitations.
“We are training lawyers who feel comfortable working in Addis Ababa, Juba, Nairobi, Kinshasa, Kampala, Bujumbura, Kigali, and Dar es Salaam without having to worry about leaving for another country,” he asserted.
Key topics include discussions on innovation, artificial intelligence, climate justice, the future of law, governance and regional unity, as well as fostering stronger ties among legal professionals across the region.
