In a post published on his social media account, Torres denounced the “deafening silence” of the electoral observation missions from the Organization of American States (OAS) and the European Union (EU) regarding Trump’s clear meddling in the elections.
With his anti-communist rhetoric, Trump threatened to cut aid to this Central American country if the electorate did not support his presidential candidate, Nasry Asfura, of the right-wing National Party (PN).
In the same message, the US president hinted at imposing economic reprisals if Hondurans supported the leftist presidential candidate, Rixi Moncada, of the ruling Liberty and Refoundation Party (Libre), the frontrunner in all pre-election polls.
On the eve of the vote, the US magnate went even further, announcing that he would pardon (a pardon granted on Monday) former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez (2014-2022), who had been sentenced in the United States to 45 years in prison for shipping hundreds of tons of cocaine to the northern power.
“If presidents are now going to be chosen abroad, what’s the point of elections? And without elections, what are you going to observe?” the deputy foreign minister asked the hundreds of OAS and EU observers who monitored the November 30 general elections.
The Undersecretary of State in President Xiomara Castro’s administration expressed concern about the actions of these organizations and warned against the inconsistency of promoting democratic processes that, he emphasized, could be conditioned by foreign influence.
“We cannot speak of free elections while foreign actors dictate the course of the country,” stressed the Deputy Minister of Foreign Policy.
