Chile: human rights activists decry Kast’s attempt to free repressors

Santiago, Chile, Dec 5 (Prensa Latina) Human rights activists condemned, in a statement the proposal by far-right presidential candidate Jose Antonio Kast to release those convicted in Chile for crimes against humanity.

They warned that the proposal to pardon or release those who committed the most serious human rights violations during the civic-military dictatorship represents a painful setback and a direct affront to the victims and their families.

The presidential candidate for the Partido Republicano (Republican Party) has expressed support for pardoning prisoners aged 70 and older with terminal illnesses, including those at the Punta Peuco prison.

Miguel Krassnoff, sentenced to over 1,000 years for kidnappings, torture, murder, forced disappearances, and other crimes committed during the Augusto Pinochet regime (1973-1990), is currently held in that jail.

The statement warns that any attempt to overturn court rulings or seek impunity will only deepen Chile’s wounds, with unforeseen consequences.

Renowned human rights activists, such as lawyer Nelson Caucoto, Alicia Lira, president of the Association of Relatives of the Politically Executed, Luciano Fouillioux, Francisco Ugas, and Maria Paz Ortega, among others, signed the document.
