The Ministry of Mines and Energy reported that this new initiative marks Gecelca’s evolution from its historical coal-fired thermoelectric operations to the production of clean energy.
The project includes the installation of a 200-megawatt solar farm that will benefit more than 150,000 families on the Caribbean coast, one of the regions most affected by high electricity costs and energy vulnerability.
Minister Edwin Palma commented that this initiative represents a departure from the current energy model. “This is a concrete step toward fulfilling President Gustavo Petro’s promise: that families won’t have to choose between food and electricity.
Energy transition is beginning to be felt where it’s needed most, and it also marks the start of the decarbonization of coal-fired power plants,” he stated.
It was also revealed that the new project will channel resources to boost other renewable energy alternatives, accelerate the reduction of energy poverty, and promote fairer tariffs.
Additionally, the ministry emphasized, it will increase the portfolio of large-scale clean energy generation.
