President Sheinboum: Cordination without subordination to US

Mexico City, Dec. 8 (Prensa Latina) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum described her recent meeting with her US counterpart, Donald Trump, as cordial and reiterated the importance of coordination without subordination in relations with the neighboring country.

“It was a very cordial meeting, and President Trump showed great respect for Mexico, which we will always appreciate. We may not agree, but I believe we must always strive for a good relationship,” the president stated.

As on other occasions, the head of the Executive Branch, during her usual press conference at the National Palace, expressed her conviction that the Latin American country should seek a good relationship with the northern nation and listed the reasons, such as the nearly 40 million Mexicans living in the United States.

She emphasized the importance of defending the agreements reached without confrontation, stressing that this relationship is based on principles and without subordination.

“Since February, during President Trump’s term, what we have made clear is coordination without subordination, respect for our sovereignty, respect for our territory, respect for sovereignty in the broadest sense,” she added.

She reiterated that only the people of Mexico can decide how they are run and reaffirmed the importance of defending Mexican nationals abroad, a topic discussed with the Republican president and other members of the U.S. cabinet, such as Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Sheinbaum commented that the meeting held with Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, during the World Cup draw, was not formally a political event, but rather more related to sports, although they agreed to continue working on trade issues.
