Bukele highlights anti-gang policy

San Salvador, Dec 31 (Prensa Latina) The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, highlighted the success of the security policy in confronting gangs, while other sources emphasized its impact on the economy.

During a recent interview with a Spanish YouTuber, the president said that his government has captured approximately 95% of gang members without any civilian deaths.

He noted that “there are still some inactive members; they may be hiding or have fled. We’re looking for them; every day we find one hiding somewhere, but basically, they’re all here; and civilian casualties, zero,” he stated in TheGrefg’s post.

The president stated that without the support of the Armed Forces and control of the prisons, these results in the fight against gangs would not have been achieved.

On the other hand, Carlos Acevedo, economist and former president of the Central Reserve Bank (BCR), addressed the impact of security on the economy, stating that the projected four percent growth for this year is “unprecedented.”

“We’re already beginning to see the effects on the economy at the macro level, contrary to those who said that ‘you can’t eat security’ and all that kind of rhetoric. I think we’re starting to see signs that the security environment is having a significant impact,” he affirmed.

He stresed that the set of policies implemented by the government is generating positive results and expectations. These results, he emphasized, are enabling a series of initiatives that would not have been possible in the past.
