Report requested on “Shield of the Americas” in Peru

Lima, Aug 16 (Prensa Latina) A motion submitted to Parliament to interpellate Defense Minister Rafael Belaunde includes questions reflecting concerns about Peru's involvement in the U.S. military project "Shield of the Americas."

The proposed interpellation contains 43 questions regarding the portfolio of the neoliberal businessman—who ran unsuccessfully for the presidency in the recent election campaign, shifting from a critical stance toward then-candidate Keiko Fujimori to supporting her in the runoff election she narrowly won.

Of these questions, four address Washington’s controversial military project, which is presented as a multinational, continental agreement to combat transnational crime and terrorism.

The first question on the subject asks for clarification on whether Peru’s Armed Forces possess the operational, logistical, and budgetary capacity to participate in “Shield of the Americas” operations.

The list of questions inquires about the chains of command envisioned in the Donald Trump administration’s project and whether it anticipates the United States conducting military operations on Peruvian soil.

“How does this military agreement differ from other multilateral defense cooperation agreements or exercises previously signed by Peru?” asks another question, which also requests details regarding command structures, scope, obligations, and the participation of foreign forces.

Following the submission of the motion—signed by more than 20 lawmakers from the progressive party Juntos por el Perú (JP)—media outlets hostile to the organization questioned the appropriateness of the requested interpellation, arguing that Minister Belaúnde has been in office for little more than two weeks.

The motion’s proponents counter that this timeframe has been sufficient for him to get up to speed on his ministry’s affairs.
