Parliamentary League: Peru must vote against the US blockade of Cuba

Lima, Oct 23 (Prensa Latina) The Peru-Cuba Parliamentary League has declared that the government should maintain the country’s traditional policy and vote in favor of ending the United States’ blockade on Cuba when the matter comes before the United Nations next week.

“It is incumbent upon the Peruvian government to uphold its traditional stance and vote in favor of the draft resolution presented by Cuba—consistent with the historic ties of respect between the Republic of Peru and Cuba, as well as the principles of multilateralism and the United Nations Charter,” the League stated in a press release.

“The United States is openly intensifying its economic warfare and collective punishment against Cuba through an energy blockade—which also functions as a naval blockade—aimed at suffocating its people and strangling its economy,” the League argued in a statement signed by 10 lawmakers.

The League added that these actions constitute a flagrant and massive violation of the human rights of the Cuban people, the principles of international law, respect for sovereignty, and every nation’s right to self-determination.

It further noted that the cruelty of these measures is unjustifiable; the shortage of essential medicines and medical supplies is leading to the deaths of children, while tens of thousands of patients have been unable to undergo necessary surgeries due to limitations in the electricity supply.

The League expressed that the majority of the international community will once again vote in favor of Cuba—a move that signifies defending the right of all peoples to freedom, independence, and dignity, while supporting peace, multilateralism, and respect for human rights.

“There are no arguments that can justify the blockade, the energy siege, or the suffering of the Cuban people, who are subjected to extreme deprivation. Cuba is not a threat; the blockade itself is,” they added. The declaration is signed by senators Silvana Robles, Jaime Quito, Humberto Morales, Jose Castillo, Iber Maravi, Serafin Andres Lujan, Wilfredo Verano, and Jose Chipana.
