Ecuador justifies its assault on Mexican Embassy at the ICJ

The Hague, The Netherlands, May 1 (Prensa Latina) Representatives of the Government of Ecuador justified on Wednesday, before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the assault on the Mexican Embassy in Quito, an act that they described as unusual and isolated. Wednesday's hearing is part of the lawsuit filed against Ecuador by Mexican authorities and in it, Ecuadorian Ambassador to the Netherlands Andrés Terán noted that there is no risk of future intrusions in diplomatic venues.

According to Terán, Ecuador acted in this way on the night of April 5 to arrest a “common criminal,” in reference to former Vice President Jorge Glas, who was a refugee in the Mexican Embassy and had received a positive answer to his request for political asylum.

On Tuesday, Mexico accused Ecuador of “crossing lines that should not be crossed in international law” for raiding the embassy violently and assaulting a diplomat physically.

Terán, in turn, assured that there are no threats at this moment on Mexico’s properties in Ecuador, and said that he respects the inviolability of real estate and archives.

Attorney Alfredo Crossato, who represent the Ecuadorian Executive, indicated that Mexico abused the figure of diplomatic asylum and obstructed justice.

The only reason why Ecuador raided the Mexican Embassy was to arrest Glas, so there is no reason for any future action, Crossato said.
