Taliban gains control of districts in central Afghanistan

Kabul, May 21 (Prensa Latina) Several key districts in the Maidan Wardak province were overrun by the Taliban after heavy attacks conducted by the radical group during the last three days, an official source reported in Kabul on Friday.

Regional Parliamentarian Mahdi Rasikh informed that the Jalrez district governor’s facilities and the police headquarters are now under the control of the extremist organization.

Rasikh explained that some members of the Government forces were captured by the Taliban after attacking the district, which remained under siege during the last two years.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense stated in a communique that the Afghan forces began an operation to clear the district of militants.

Afghan forces and the Taliban observed a ceasefire between May 12 and 15; but a day later the truce ended, the Ministry of Defense reported clashes in 18 of 34 provinces of the country.
