Latin American intellectuals reject US interference

Managua, Jun 16 (Prensa Latina) More than 100 Latin American intellectuals, academics and writers, many of them Nicaraguans, on Tuesday signed a statement considering US interventionist actions in sovereign nations to be unacceptable.

The statement, which Prensa Latina had access to, rejected US policy interfering ‘in internal affairs of our sovereign nations and threats and sanctions that violate international law.’

We condemn as illegal and alien to the dignity, independence and right of the peoples to self-determination, the recurrent practice of sanctions and aggressive messages against Nicaragua, Venezuela and Cuba.

The group of intellectuals demanded a new version of the Organization of American States (OAS) that represents the legitimate interests of Latin America and the Caribbean ‘and not an obedient and shameful instrument to preserve the hegemonic power of imperialism.’

After showing solidarity with struggles for the conquest of peace in the region, the signatories expressed their conviction that ‘We are neither a colony nor a foreign protectorate.’
