Over half of the world population to live with water stress

Geneva, Oct 18 (Prensa Latina) More than half of the Earth's population will be living with water stress by 2030, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) recalled here on Monday when endorsing the Water Declaration.

The declaration seeks to speed up the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 6, due to which a new vision and strategy for hydrology and an associated plan of action were approved, the organization said, which also supported a Water and Climate Coalition.

The Extraordinary World Meteorological Congress, which began on October 12 and will run through October 22, issued new resolutions which reflect the top priority given to water due to growing water stress and related dangers, along with an inadequate and fragmented capacity to meet these challenges.

According to the perspective disclosed, in nine years, a global cooperative community will successful address the growing problems related to hydrological extremes, water availability and quality and food security.

Moreover, operational hydrology will make progress through the improvement of science, infrastructure, the creation of capacities and supplementary services, in the context of sustainable development and greater resilience, according to the text.

Climate change will further worsen current conditions and increase vulnerability for water-related disasters, the WMO warned.

Given the urgency of this situation, its declaration seeks that, in 2030, people across the planet can have access to early alerts in order to take swift measures against floods and droughts.
