Putin congratulates Daniel Ortega for electoral victory in Nicaragua

Daniel-Ortega-Alexander-Jojolikov
Moscow, Nov 11 (Prensa Latina) Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated his Nicaraguan counterpart Daniel Ortega for the victory of the Sandinista National Liberation Front in the November 7 elections, local press reported on Thursday.

The message conveyed to the Nicaraguan president by Russian Ambassador to Managua Alexander Jojolikov warned that the election results fully confirmed Ortega’s political authority, TASS news agency informed.

The Russian president further stated that that victory demonstrates support to the work of the Sandinista Front he leads, aimed at the socio-economic development of the country, protection of its sovereignty and international stances.

According to Putin, the Russian-Nicaraguan relations are based on ancient traditions of friendship and mutual respect. At the same time, he expressed confidence that the strategic partnership between the two countries will continue to grow through joint efforts.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova recalled that in recent years, especially after the April 2018 coup attempt, Nicaragua has been a target of open and cynical interference in its internal affairs, pressure and the use of illegitimate sanctions.

Zakharova noted that such measures have a detrimental effect on a politically stable country with an economy that successfully makes progress, located in a very turbulent Central American region.
