Havana, Feb 7 (Prensa Latina) The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, recognized today projects and research results of different universities that set up their stand at the International Congress of Higher Education "University 2022".

During a tour of the exhibition spaces, the president verified how innovation is used based on sustainable and inclusive development, a premise that guides the event with headquarters in the Havana Convention Center.

Among the stands visited was that of the Central University Marta Abreu de Las Villas (UCLV), alma mater of the head of state and where he received his Doctor degree on Technical Sciences.

As explained to Prensa Latina by the director of Communication of the UCLV, Aleida Suárez, that institution supported initiatives in the confrontation with the Covid-19 pandemic, such as the realization of a diagnostic for that disease using X-rays.

Other achievements of the higher education center are the obtention of LC3 cement, which is cheaper, less polluting and has better properties, as well as innovations in artificial intelligence, robotics and precision agriculture.

The house of higher studies, which this year will celebrate its 70th foundation anniversary, also exhibits results in terms of potato cultivation, which would contribute to the nation’s food sovereignty and the export of these products, Suárez pointed out.

On this day, Díaz-Canel opened the international congress with a conference entitled “Government management based on science and innovation: advances and challenges”, in which he pondered the links between the knowledge sector, the production of goods and services, and the public administration for the development of the country.

“Science and innovation have an answer to everything,” he said, specifying how they influence the nation’s prioritized policies and programs.

“We consider the need to turn knowledge into transforming social forces. It is not about having more science, but that these capacities allow us a prosperous, sustainable and fair development”, said the president.

University 2022 began today and will be in session until next Friday with activities under the virtual and face-to-face modality, due to the conditions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Academics, professors and students from some 34 countries participate in the event, who in workshops, symposiums and forums will focus on the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals, the university-business link, knowledge management and the training of competent professionals. .
