Ecuadorian Gov’t and indigenous people still at odds

Ecuador dialogo indigenas
Quito, Sep 6 (Prensa Latina) The Government and the indigenous movement in Ecuador are holding talks on Tuesday without agreements, after the opening of new technical tables was postponed until pending issues are settled.

On Tuesday, the Government promised to respond to issues addressed in the framework of the analysis of Energy and Renewable Resources.

“We have reached certain conclusions. We are going to respond in writing to these issues tomorrow,” Energy and Mines Minister Xavier Vera Grunauer said after a few-hour meeting between the parties.

The requests are based on specific issues such as mining and oil, reforms to the Hydrocarbons Law, and the Amazon Law.

The talks began on July 13 to seek solutions to 10 issues agreed upon by the parties and defined in the Act for Peace, signed after 18 days of a national strike in June.

The indigenous leaders have warned that they will respect the deadline established for the negotiations, but they will implement new actions in the case the set period ends without the solutions promised by the Government and desired by the social sectors that are participating in the demonstrations.
