Purge of grassroots authorities continues in Peru

Lima, Dec 27 (Prensa Latina) Over 1,000 district sub-prefects were dismissed on Wednesday due to a resolution of the Ministry of the Interior, which only justified this measure through a policy of the new administration for the appointment of officials.

The resolution dismissed 1,076 sub-prefects of districts, grassroots jurisdictions of the administrative structure of the State.

Those dismissed worked in the regions of Amazonas, Ancash, Apurimac, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Callao, Cusco, Huancavelica, Huanuco, Ica, Junín, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, Loreto, Moquegua, Pasco, Piura, Puno, San Martin, Tacna, Tumbes and Ucayali, 23 of the 26 in this country.

Previously, hundreds of regional prefects and sub-prefects appointed by former President Pedro Castillo were dismissed. Castillo was ousted on Dec.7 for trying to dissolve the opposing Parliament, among other measures.

Before Castillo´s downfall, politicians and media outlets that opposed his administration accused the government of using prefects and sub-prefects politically, and a right-wing bill was presented at the Parliament to remove those posts from the state structure.
