Greece reinforces border in view of a possible wave of refugees

Athens, Feb 27 (Prensa Latina) The Greek authorities on Monday reinforced controls along its land and sea border with Türkiye because of a possible wave of refugees affected by the February 6 earthquakes, Athens television highlighted.

Hundreds of additional border agents began patrolling the border in the Evros or Maritsa region; as surveillance measures and fences were stepped up, the source reported.

The mass movement of millions of people is not the solution, Migration Minister Notis Mitarachi said, emphasizing the need for emergency aid to be sent to Turkey and Syria before this happens.

According to analysts, some people left homeless due to the earthquakes will start heading toward neighboring countries in the spring if the necessary humanitarian assistance does not arrive.

Greek authorities announced recently that dozens more coast guard units would be deployed to patrol the Aegean Sea islands close to the Turkish coast.
